International director, writer, teacher, and coach Johnathon Pape joined the Eastman School of Music faculty in the Fall of 2007. Mr.Pape’s 22-year career spans many disciplines of theater, musical theater, and opera.
Johnathon Pape brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience as a stage director, musician, teacher and dramatist from some of the premier lyric theater companies throughout the United States. He began his career as a successful teacher but has spent the last fifteen years producing and directing all forms of professional lyric theater.
Mr. Pape’s career has taken him to the Czech Republic for a 1994 Fulbright Research Grant in opera and theater; to Habimah, the National Theater of Israel, for Terrence McNally’s Master Class; to the Irish Arts Festival for Brian Friel’s Molly Sweeney; to the New York City Opera, where he directed the world premiere of Griffelkin by Lukas Foss; to the San Diego Opera for the United States premiere of Daniel Catán’s La hija de Rappaccini; and to Los Angeles for the premiere of Shirley Lauro’s A Piece of My Heart, about the women who served in Viet Nam—a special installation production mounted in the Los Angeles National Cemetery.
