Matthew Wiest

Cellist Matt Wiest envisions a music career that allows him to be both a performer and an educator. For him, the purpose of sharing music is to create meaningful connections with all people, cultures, and the world around us. 

Matt is currently pursuing his Master’s of Music in Cello Performance and Literature as a Teaching Assistant with Professor Steven Doane at the Eastman School of Music. Previously, he attended the University of Colorado at Boulder where he studied with Professor David Requiro for his Bachelor’s of Music in Cello Performance, graduating with high honors. In the past, Matt has attended several summer music festivals including the Innsbrook Institute, Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival, Bowdoin International Music Festival, and most recently was one of eleven cellists selected to participate in the 2023 season of Music Academy of the West. In 2022, he was awarded 2nd place in the CU Boulder Honors Competition, and has received several scholarship awards including the Colorado ASTA Summer Scholarship, the Sher Music Scholarship, and the Stormo Music Endowment. Matt has been selected to perform in masterclasses under the Calidore String Quartet, the Borromeo String Quartet, the Takacs Quartet, Lynn Harrell, and Robert deMaine.
