TAR Instructors

Position description

There are currently 28 instructors who fall into this category (this number fluctuates per the needs of each department). They carry a load of up to 12 hours of teaching/administrative assignments (with 2 hours additional possible). The TAR faculty carry less than half the normal (full) teaching and work load of full-time faculty within the school. Any exception to the maximum load must be approved by the associate dean. These are non-salaried positions and do not include UR benefits.

  • All are hourly teachers (TAR – time as reported)
  • All are on one-year contracts
  • All are paid over a 10-month period (every 2 weeks with no pay in July and August)
  • Not eligible for UR benefits
  • May not teach consistently over 12 hours (exceptions must be approved by associate dean) and reclassification review must occur in case of approved exceptions
  • Are not expected to recruit or maintain a particular teaching load
  • Are required to attend departmental and full faculty meetings and juries

Hiring process

The department chair will convene a 3 person search committee (at minimum) of appropriate Instructors from the department with a need.

  • SLC will approve the initial job description that will form the basis for the advertising for each Time as Reported position. Ads can indicate: strong internal candidate identified, if that is the case. Ads will go to all ESM / ECMS / RPO related faculty and performers. Efforts will be made to attract a diverse pool of candidates.
  • Any candidate expressing interest will be required to complete a “Position Application Form”.

Internal candidates- Each department will recommend any current interns to the SLC. External candidates can be considered at the departmental search committee’s request.

  • The search committee will establish procedures for reviewing the candidates.
  • The departmental chair will bring the recommendation back to the SLC.
  • The SLC will then review their recommendation and either accept or reject the recommendation.
  • Any approved candidate would go forward to the interview process with the ECMS Associate Dean.
  • ECMS Associate Dean will negotiate contract.
