Interns

Position Description

The ECMS currently has about 47 interns (this number fluctuates per the needs of each department). All are TAR and none are eligible for UR benefits. The majority of our interns are classified as graduate assistants because they are still students at ESM. Graduate assistant hours range from 0 – 6 hours. Exception to the 6 hour limit must be approved by the Associate Dean. A few interns have completed their college studies and are still teaching for ECMS as interns. These interns may work up to 17.5 hours.

  • All are hourly teachers
  • All are on one-year contracts
  • All are paid over a 10-month period (every 2 weeks with no pay in July and August)
  • Not eligible for UR benefits
  • May not teach consistently over 6 hours without permission of dean. Interns who are no longer students may work up to 17.5 hours.
  • Are not expected to recruit or maintain a particular teaching load
  • Are required to attend departmental and full faculty meetings and are encouraged to be part of the jury process.
  • Are required to participate in the school’s intern/mentor program

Intern Appointments

Hiring process

Once it has been determined that a department is in need of a particular intern, the following steps will be taken:

Department chairs will seek intern candidates via email:

  • Send a mass email to all ECMS instructors and all ESM professors related to that instrument/classroom/ensemble specialty requesting the names of candidates suited to teach in the ECMS. Copy in the chair/s of the ESM and ECMS departments as well as ECMS associate dean
  • Call or email recommended candidates and set up interviews with them. For contact info, see office staff.
  • At the interview include the instructor who will serve as the intern’s mentor – preferably a Senior or half-time Instructor, as mentoring is built into their contracts
  • Send the selected candidate to ECMS Associate Dean for hire

ECMS Associate Dean will:

  • Negotiate hourly rate
  • Collect resume and contact info
  • Explain student assignment system and get a folder for them (if applicable)
  • Explain to them how to get space to teach in (GerryAnn)
  • Introduce them to entire office staff
  • Show them where teachers desk is and bulletin boards are
  • Give them catalogue
  • Send new intern to their mentor

Mentor will discuss the following with newly hired intern:

  • Curriculum
  • Juries / exams / Honors juries
  • Recitals – classification, sign up forms, accompanists,
  • Studio recitals / master classes
  • Meeting attendance
  • Calendar year (different than ESM)
  • Make-up lessons/classes/rehearsals
  • ECMS diplomas
  • Review faculty handbook and student handbook online
