ECMS Department Chair Duties

  • Convene regular departmental meetings (minimum 3 per year) to discuss:
    • Events such as master classes and special department performances.
    • Teaching challenges and strategies.
    • Department enrollment, paying attention to studio loads and enrollment goals.
    • Any other departmental needs as they arise.
  • Review curricula with faculty: update repertoire; review expectations for student achievement; review methods of assessment.
  • Oversee Intern/Mentor program:
    • In consultation with collegiate faculty, Chairs assist the Associate Dean in identifying Intern candidates.
    • Chairs will select Mentors for department Interns. Preference will be given to Half-Time and Full-Time Instructors, since mentoring is a requirement of their contracts. Chairpersons themselves are also expected to serve as Mentors.
    • Chairs are responsible for ensuring that all requirements of the ECMS Intern/Mentor program are being met in their department.
  • In collaboration with the Associate Dean, lead the search process for new faculty appointments.
  • Meet with the ECMS Dean and the other Chairpersons on a monthly basis, to deal with matters of school-wide concern: student progress reports, examinations and juries, program evaluation questionnaires, etc.
