Graduate Degrees

The Master of Music (MM) is a performance-based degree. Prior completion of an undergraduate degree at an accredited institution is required. Most successful applicants will have completed the Bachelor of Music degree, or the close equivalent of its core curriculum as part of another undergraduate degree program.

Majors in Composition and in Music Education are offered in both the MM and the MA degree. The MM degree option for these majors includes performance as a strong secondary focus, and a successful audition is required for admission to the MM. The MA option for these majors has research as a secondary focus, and does not require an audition or lessons.

The Master of Arts (MA) is a research degree, with a strong emphasis on writing and research skills. Full command of written English is assumed for students admitted to MA programs, and is required before students are permitted to begin a thesis or dissertation project. Prior completion of an undergraduate degree at an accredited institution is required.

Admission to the MA degree does not require an audition, but does require an interview. It is especially important that Composition and Music Education applicants consider whether they should apply to the MA or MM program option, based on their background and goals.

The DMA degree is awarded for high attainments in the practice of music, with emphasis on the arts of performing and teaching. A candidate for this degree must be a capable artist who demonstrates intellectual attributes of the highest order.

Studies in composition and music education may be undertaken within the division of graduate professional studies (the DMA as described here) or within the division of graduate research studies. The respective programs have differences in emphasis and course content. In terms of applying, the Doctor of Musical Arts program requires an audition on an applied instrument or voice; the Doctor of Philosophy program does not require an audition for admission. Emphasis is on practical applied music in varying degrees in each of the DMA majors, and constitutes a distinctive feature of the division. Thus the composition and music education majors contain a strong performance component in the DMA degree program, and have a distinctly different emphasis in the PhD degree program.

The Doctor of Philosophy degree is awarded for completion of scholarly research satisfactorily defended in a dissertation or for outstanding creative work. It is assumed that recipients of this degree are not only well-versed in the subject matter and techniques of a specific discipline, but also have demonstrated a breadth of interest and originality of outlook that indicate real promise of success in research or composition, as well as mastery of the teaching of their disciplines

A combined MA/PhD program is offered in the Composition, Theory and the Musicology departments.

Doctor of Philosophy students majoring in music education will have earned a master’s degree before being admitted to the PhD program. Doctor of Philosophy students majoring in Composition, Musicology or Theory may be admitted having earned only a bachelor’s degree and in that case will earn the master’s degree en passant.

Composition and Music Education majors are offered either the within the DMA or PhD degree option. Research and writing is emphasized in the PhD degree program, and performance in the DMA degree program. The DMA requires an audition on an applied instrument or voice while the PhD does not.

Special Programs

The Advanced Diploma in Performance offers students who have completed a bachelor’s and/or master’s degree in music to focus on performance studies with our applied faculty. The program centers around private instruction as well as high-level chamber music and ensemble experiences. In addition, students will have the ability to enroll in practical elective coursework that will supplement their performance study and better prepare them for a career as a professional musician.

The Advanced Diploma in Concertmaster Studies provides intensive and focused study in the area of orchestral playing, audition preparation and execution as well as leadership training, as it relates both on and off stage. The curriculum is designed to prepare candidates for a career as concertmaster of a professional orchestra.

The online Master of Arts in Music Leadership degree program is designed for musicians who seek to lead traditional or non-traditional musical arts organizations. This degree combines engaging online learning, courses from Eastman’s performance and scholarly offerings, and hands-on experience through the capstone project.

The Institute for Music Leadership (IML) also offers a variety of opportunities for graduate students including the Certificate of Achievement in Arts Leadership, elective courses, advising, professional development and more.

Summers-only study is available for students admitted to the Master of Arts or Master of Music in Music Education (with Professional Certification). Normally, a Summers-Only student has full-time employment as a music teacher and completes the majority of coursework for the degree during consecutive summer sessions. For those music teachers employed in the Rochester area, a limited number of courses may be completed during the Fall and Spring semesters.

A variety of additional certificate options are available to students enrolled in MM, MA, DMA or PhD degree programs. A certificate program consists of a prescribed curriculum that ranges from 16-25 credits, including components such as applied music, academic coursework, independent study, ensembles, and in some cases, an internship experience.

Graduate Scholarships and Stipends

The Eastman School of Music provides financial support to its graduate students primarily through the graduate scholarships and assistantships. Graduate applicants who are invited to audition or interview for their program, and are recommended for admission to the School, are automatically considered for support, though some assistantships require an audition or interview. Applicants can indicate interest in specific assistantships in the graduate application. Graduate scholarships and assistantships are determined by the Graduate Studies Office.

In some cases where it is unclear, international applicants will be asked to submit a third party transcript evaluation.  Documents will be reviewed in the month of January and you will be notified if a third party evaluation is needed for your application. If you are notified that an evaluation is required your transcripts should be evaluated by an organization specializing in foreign credential evaluation, such as World Education Services (www.wes.org) or Educational Credential Evaluators, Inc. (www.ece.org). For either service we would be requesting a course-by-course evaluation.

Please note that the Eastman School of Music reserves the right to verify the accuracy of all transcripts, and to require submission of official documentation at any point in the admissions review process.

Final official transcripts will be required for students who ultimately enroll. Offers of admission are contingent upon receipt of final official transcripts which must be sent directly from the issuing institution, and show degree conferment.  Transcripts uploaded by an applicant within their application are not considered official documents.
