Born and raised in Brooklyn NY, Gregory Galand started his musical journey at eleven, and instantly fell in love with the double bass. He began studying with Vasil Fomitsky during his time at Laguardia High School. He is continuing his studies with James VanDemark at the Eastman School of Music.
He attended the Chautauqua Institution to study with Curtis Burris and Owen Lee, and traveled to Austria to participate in AIMS. During his career, Gregory has played with a number of ensembles, such as the Ottava Bass Quartet, New York Youth Symphony, and the Eastman Philharmonia. While in the New York Youth Symphony, he participated in the Grammy award winning album “Works by Florence Price, Jessie Montgomery, Valerie Coleman” in 2022. He has won multiple concerto competitions, most recently the 2025 Eastman School of Music Bass Concerto Competition with Nino Rota’s Divertimento Concertante.
Gregory has had a passion for teaching since high school, working with a number of private students to hone their skills on the bass. Sharing his knowledge of the instrument is one of the most important tasks for Gregory.
