Early Childhood Music Lab
General Information
DescriptionThese experiences are offered in connection with the Early Childhood Music methods course at the Eastman School of Music. Led by Laura Turley (Early Childhood Music Program Director, Eastman Community Music School) and Mara E. Culp (Associate Professor, Department of Music Teaching and Learning), children will participate in play-based music-making experiences and students at Eastman will gain hands-on teaching experiences. Lab content, practices, and activities are informed by the early childhood music program at the Eastman Community Music School, but are not the same.
Up to 12 children will be enrolled in each class. To promote inclusion, accessibility, and education, these experiences are offered at a deeply discounted tuition of $50 per child. Additionally, six (6) spaces will be reserved for University of Rochester (UR) families (students, faculty, and staff). Six (6) spaces will also be reserved for families in the Rochester community (city and surrounding suburbs). After the deadline to register passes (9/5), remaining spaces will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
Music Times Two Lab (2-3.5 years old)
Fridays, 9:40-10:25am
A tailored experience for children from 2 years to 3.5 years of age and their parents/caregivers that incorporates music in a variety of modes and meters. As children participate in experiences meant to prepare them to learn musical skills and knowledge (music vocabulary, iconic notation), activities include vocalizing (singing, humming, chanting, speaking, whispering), moving (dancing, wiggling), playing instruments (percussion), and listening (folk tunes, popular music, classical music). Teachers also create space to learn about and share ideas for children’s musical development and home-based music activities.
