This is a yearlong course divided into two semesters.

Fundamental Musicianship is an introductory theory and aural skills class covering fundamental rhythm and pitch reading and writing. Students will understand duple and triple rhythm as well as major and minor reading, dictation, and composition. Students will focus on scales, keys, pitch labeling (treble and bass clef), and foundational aural and kinesthetic understanding with all concepts. We will also explore basic harmonic progression.

Students in grades 7 and 8 through adults should first take the Music Theory Placement Test to see if they are ready to enroll in the ECMS Diploma program by going directly into Music Theory and Aural Skills I.

PLEASE NOTE: Dr. Foley will hold a student/parent class and information meeting on Saturday, September 13 from 9:35 – 10:25 am in the Annex building, room 902. Who should attend:

  • Students in grades 2-4 and their parents,
  • Parents of students in grades 5-8 who are NEW to chorus or Theory in Motion,
  • Parents of students who are taking Fundamental Musicianship.
