Congratulations to violist Brett Deubner ’90E, ’92E (MM) for being named Assistant Professor of Viola and Chamber Music Coordinator at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, beginning this fall.
An internationally acclaimed soloist, chamber musician, recording artist, and educator, Deubner has performed with more than 90 orchestras in 14 countries. His debut with the Grammy Award-winning New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, premiering Lalo Schifrin’s Triple Concerto, led to engagements throughout the United States and abroad. His contributions to the viola repertoire include more than 50 concertos composed and dedicated to him, as well as 25 critically acclaimed recordings.
His honors include the United States Congressional Certificate of Recognition for his commitment to music and education, the Global Music Awards Silver Medal for Transfiguration—a recording of works by Stanley Grill for two, three, and four violas, for which he performed all parts—and a Latin Grammy nomination for Best Classical CD Recording for his recording of Houston Dunleavy’s A Kiss Before the World’s End with the Orquesta de Heredia of Costa Rica.
Deubner has also recorded with the Czech Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra, Läänesaarte Kammerorkester, and the BBC Scottish National Symphony for Orchid Classics. As a chamber musician, he has performed with distinguished artists including Pinchas Zukerman, the Tokyo String Quartet, and Carol Wincenc, among other collaborators in the United States and abroad.
Deubner earned both his Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees from the Eastman School of Music.
