2025 Rochester Audition Dates: Fridays February 7, 14, 21, and 28
PRESCREENING AND AUDITION REQUIREMENTS
Undergraduate
Flute pre-screening requirements: By December 1, all flute applicants must upload a pre-screen video. The pre-screening recording must include each of the following items. The pre-screen video can be recorded either with or without piano accompaniment.
- Mozart: Entire first and second movements plus cadenzas from either D or G major concerto
- J.S. Bach: 2 movements from a sonata or partita of your choice
- A complete work of your choice
- The following 3 standard orchestral excerpts (not the entire work):
- Beethoven: Leonore Overture #3: mm. 328 through 360
- Brahms: Symphony IV; Movement 4, mm. 89-103
- Mendelssohn: Scherzo from Midsummer Night’s Dream; from 12 measures before P to the end
Audition Repertoire Requirements
Applicants who are selected based on faculty review of the pre-screening round will be invited to audition. If an applicant is unable to audition in-person, they may upload a video audition by February 1st with each movement and each excerpt recorded in its own separate, unedited track.*
*Applicants who audition by video will also be scheduled for a follow-up Zoom interview (non-performance) with faculty.
The repertoire for the audition is as follows:
- Mozart: Either complete D or G major concerto, with cadenzas
- J.S. Bach: A complete sonata or partita of your choice
- An additional work of your choice
- The following 3 standard orchestral excerpts (not the entire work):
- Beethoven: Leonore Overture #3: mm. 328 through 360
- Brahms: Symphony IV; Movement 4, mm. 89-103
- Mendelssohn: Scherzo from Midsummer Night’s Dream; from 12 measures before P to the end.
- Additional excerpt(s) as appropriate to training and experience
Graduate

- J.S. Bach: Two movements from a sonata or partita of your choice

- The following 5 standard orchestral excerpts (not the entire work):
- Beethoven: Leonore Overture #3 – mm. 328 through 360
- Brahms: Symphony IV; Movement 4, mm. 89-103
- Mendelssohn: Scherzo from Midsummer Night’s Dream; from 12 measures before rehearsal letter P to the end.
- Hindemith: Symphonic Metamorphosis; Solo from Movement III – Andantino
- Saint-Saens: “Aviary” movement from Carnival of the Animals

- Ravel – Daphnis et Chloe – flute solo
- Mendelssohn: Scherzo from Midsummer Night’s Dream; from 12 measures before rehearsal letter P to the end.
- Hindemith: Symphonic Metamorphosis; Solo from Movement III – Andantino
- Saint-Saens: “Aviary” movement from Carnival of the Animals
