Evan Martschenko (he/him) is a music theorist, pianist, vocalist, harpsichordist, Sproull Fellow, and PhD student at the Eastman School of Music. Evan’s current research examines the history of pitch-class set theory, chronicling its historical development and detailing the methods that led to its current usage in the music theory discipline. His co-authored paper “Uncovering Howard Hanson’s Proto-Set Theory Pedagogy” was awarded an honorable mention for the Music Theory Society of New York State’s Patricia Carpenter Emerging Scholar Award in 2025. Evan is also interested in musical reactions to contemporary historical events, focusing on American and Polish politics since the late twentieth century. He has presented his research at regional, national, and international conferences, including the annual meetings of the Society for Minimalist Music (2024), Gesellschaft für Musiktheorie (2023), and the Society for Music Theory (2024; 2025). Evan’s article “’Feel the Emptiness’: Micro-Schemata in the Music of Henryk Mikołaj Górecki” (2024) has been published in Music Theory Online.
Passionate about teaching, Evan received the University of Cincinnati’s Excellence in Graduate Teaching Award (2024) and was named runner-up for the same award by the Midwestern Association of Graduate Schools. Currently, Evan serves as a teaching assistant at the Eastman School of Music. In the summers, Evan runs the East Carolina Piano Festival, a summer festival in Greenville, North Carolina that brings in students and guest artists from around the globe for performances, masterclasses, and a concerto competition.
