Chamber Music Recital at Memorial Art Gallery Features Works by Venetian Masters

Music by six composers who worked in the thriving musical environment of 17th century Venice will be featured during a chamber music recital at the Italian Baroque Organ in the Memorial Art Gallery.

Titled “Venetian Masters,” the program will be presented at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 15, and features violinists Boel Gidholm and Bin Huang, cellist Christopher Haritatos, and Ulrika Davidsson, organ. They will perform works by Biagio Marini, Giovanni Battisti Fontana, Giovanni Legrenzi, Dario Castello, Spirindio Bertoldo, and Johann Rosenmuller.

Gidholm has appeared throughout Europe and the United States as a baroque violinist and violist, working in early music ensembles such as New York Collegium, Apollo’s Fire, Ars Lyrica Houston, Ensemble Aperto (Hannover-Köln), and others. She has appeared in chamber music performances in Italy, France, Latvia, Canada, and Denmark.

Haritatos is a specialist in Baroque cello as well as modern cello. Before joining the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra this fall, he was on the faculty of Texas State University-San Marcos and was a member of the Austin Symphony and Austin Lyric Opera. He has performed with numerous early music ensembles, including The City Musick, Tafelmusik, and New York Collegium.

Since winning the Paganini International Violin Competition and Munich International Music Competition, Huang has pursued a concert career throughout the world. She has performed with such leading orchestras as the Bavarian Radio Symphony, Czech Philharmonic, Baltimore Symphony, China National Symphony, and others.

Davidsson is assistant professor of historical keyboards at the Eastman School of Music. She maintains a performance career on the piano, fortepiano, clavichord, organ, and harpsichord, appearing in concert in the United States, Canada, Japan, and Europe. She has toured with many chamber music ensembles and served on the music faculty of the University of Gothenburg.

Tickets to “Venetian Masters” are $10 ($7 for students) and are available by cash or check one hour before the concert. Seating is limited.

The Italian Baroque Organ was built around 1770 in central Italy. Restored and installed in 2005 at the Memorial Art Gallery, the instrument is the only one of its kind in North America. Italian Baroque Organ concerts feature Eastman School faculty and guest artists.
