Eastman School of Music will Host Mazurka Marathon

Local audiences will have the unique opportunity to hear all 51 of Frederick Chopin's mazurkas presented in a single concert when distinguished pianist Michal Wesolowski performs in the Eastman School of Music's Kilbourn Hall at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30. The special program will have two intermissions and will conclude at 6 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.

A native of Poland, Wesolowski has made the music of Chopin a significant part of his performing and recording career, seeing the specialized form of the mazurka as a deep and intimate image of the composer's psyche. Wesolowski's repertoire spans a wide range of periods and styles, and he has been acclaimed for his interpretations of the works of Ravel and Szymanowski. The pianist has worked with contemporary composers such as Siegfried Naumann, Rolf Martinsson, and Johannes Johansson.

Wesolowski has performed extensively as a recitalist and a soloist with major orchestras in Europe, Asia, and North America. His releases on the Pianovox label have won major prizes and recognition from the premier music magazines Diapason, Monde de la Musique, and Répertoire.

While he's in Rochester, Wesolowski also will teach a piano master class from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Oct. 1, in the Ciminelli Lounge in the Eastman Student Living Center.

Wesolowski was born in Warsaw in 1936 and educated in Warsaw and Paris. He currently lives in Sweden, where he is professor of piano at the Malmo Academy of Music at Lund University.
