STUDENT PROFILE
Evan Martschenko (he/him) is a music theorist, pianist, singer, harpsichordist, and a PhD student at the Eastman School of Music. Evanβs research explores historical systems of post-tonal analysis, with a special focus on pitch-class set theories from various locations and time periods, asking how and why certain modes of analysis persist today. Interested in archival research, Evan has been awarded honorable mentions from theΒ Society for Music TheoryΒ and theΒ Music Theory Society of New York StateΒ for his paper βUncovering Howard Hansonβs Proto-Set Theory Pedagogy,β coauthored with friend Jacob Ludwig (PhD Candidate, CCM). Evan has a secondary research interest centered around American and Polish concert music in the late twentieth century. He has presented his research at regional, national, and international conferences, including the annual meetings of the Society for Minimalist Music (2024), Gesellschaft fΓΌr Musiktheorie (2023), and the Society for Music Theory (2024; 2025). Passionate about teaching, Evan received the University of Cincinnatiβs Excellence in Graduate Teaching Award (2024) and was named runner-up for the same award by the Midwestern Association of Graduate Schools. Currently, Evan serves as a teaching assistant at the Eastman School of Music, and teaches music theory and aural skills at the Eastman Community Music School. In the summers, Evan runs theΒ East Carolina Piano Festival, a summer festival in Greenville, North Carolina that brings in students and guest artists from around the globe for performances, masterclasses, and a concerto competition.
Evan lives with his fiancΓ©e Katja in Rochester, NY. In their free time, they enjoy playing board games, watching horror movies, and cooking recipes well beyond their culinary skill level.
