For alumnus David Damschroder ’77E (MM), Eastman was more than a place to study music—it was where a life’s work began to take shape.

A distinguished music theorist, educator, and author, Damschroder has spent more than four decades on the faculty of the University of Minnesota, building an internationally recognized career devoted to the study of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century music. Now, through a generous planned gift to the Eastman School of Music, he is investing in the next generation of doctoral students who will follow their own paths of discovery.

His bequest will establish an endowed fellowship that supports emerging scholars pursuing the highest levels of music research, along with a symposium fund that helps bring leading scholars and guests to Eastman through partnerships with professional organizations. By meeting the needs of today’s graduate students while strengthening opportunities for intellectual exchange, the gift will help ensure that Eastman remains a leading destination for music training, scholarship, and pedagogy.

Damschroder’s connection to music began in the family home. “My mother was a music educator, and also the church choir director,” he recalls. “So, my path towards organ was laid out for me. By the time I went to college, I had played over 200 church services.”

As a young musician, however, Damschroder was equally drawn to mathematics. He completed undergraduate degrees in both disciplines, delaying a career decision until his senior year. When he arrived at Eastman in 1975 to study organ with renowned faculty member David Craighead, he soon discovered that he did not have to choose between performance and intellectual inquiry. “Once at Eastman, integrating organ performance and music theory turned out to be an ideal trajectory for someone of my disposition,” he says.

Although Eastman’s organ resources have expanded dramatically since his student days, Damschroder remembers the energy and talent that defined the school. “The organ studios were vibrant and loaded with talent,” he says. “I remember most the camaraderie among the graduate students. It was so different from my previous years at a liberal arts college!”

That collaborative atmosphere extended beyond the organ department. By his second year, he found himself spending as much time with music theory students as with fellow organists. Surrounded by exceptional faculty, classmates, library resources, and an extraordinary range of performances, he immersed himself fully in Eastman’s musical life. “I remember sitting in the Sibley Library one afternoon adding up all the time I was spending on music: 80 hours per week,” he says. “There were so many great resources available. I was grateful to be able to take advantage of so much. Because it was all in one building, it had an intensity that kept me at peak receptivity.”

The experience proved transformative. “I had a definite sense of just how dramatically and how quickly my adult career was taking shape through all the activities I was able to pursue.”

After earning his degree, Damschroder went on to teach at the University of Minnesota, where he initially devoted much of his energy to teaching and mentorship. Over time, his scholarly work flourished as well. His extensive publications include textbooks, articles, and a multi-volume series exploring harmony across the tonal tradition, from Bach and Haydn to Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin, and beyond.

Damschroder’s gift reflects a desire to support doctoral students whose own passions may lead them toward performance, scholarship, teaching, or some combination of all three. “Future Eastman students will encounter a much different cultural landscape,” he says. “I propose to enhance the support and resources available for students whose passions and proclivities will help to keep the tonal repertoire thriving.”

For Damschroder, the gift is also an acknowledgment of what made Eastman so influential in his own life: the close proximity of world-class performance and academic study. “Given my subsequent career trajectory, it was so important to me that first-rate instruction in performance and first-rate instruction in the intellectual study of music were offered just down the hallway from one another,” he says.

Joan and Martin Messinger Dean Kate Sheeran sees that vision as deeply aligned with Eastman’s future. “David’s gift reflects one of Eastman’s enduring strengths: the belief that exceptional musicianship and rigorous scholarship belong side by side,” says Sheeran. “By investing in both student support and intellectual exchange, he is helping ensure that future generations of Eastman students have the resources, mentorship, and opportunities they need to advance the field while carrying our traditions forward.”

While the Eastman of 1975 may exist only in memory, Damschroder believes great institutions are defined by their ability to evolve. “The challenge of any great school is to reinvent itself in ever more potent and relevant ways with each new academic year,” he says. Through his generosity, future students and scholars will have new opportunities to learn, connect, and contribute to that ongoing reinvention. “Eastman draws top students because it is a very special environment,” Damschroder concludes. “The resources provided by its donors make it even more special.”
