Eastman School of Music, of the University of Rochester, is excited to host its second “Celebration of Women in Jazz” on Saturday, October 4, 2025. This event will feature concerts and workshops with world-renowned jazz artists and scholars. “It’s an honor to be part of the kind of event I wish had existed when I was starting out,” shares Associate Professor of Jazz Voice Sara Gazarek. “Collaborating with visionary women musicians and composers in this setting is deeply inspiring, but witnessing that spark ignite in so many young artists is beyond words. Last year was incredible; this year, we’re taking it even further.”
Kicking off the weekend is GRAMMY Award-winning drummer and producer Terri Lyne Carrington, presenting We Insist! from Max Roach’s “Freedom Now Suite” on Friday, October 3 at 7:30 p.m. in Kilbourn Hall. On Saturday, Carrington will present a keynote speech in Hatch Recital Hall at 9:00 a.m., followed by a full day of hands-on opportunities in improvisation, interactive learning, and networking. Young jazz musicians of all abilities, ages 14-25, are encouraged to work with Eastman jazz faculty members Christine Jensen, saxophone, and Sara Gazarek, voice, as well as trumpet phenom Milena Casado, who The New York Times deemed “a revelation.”
“We are thrilled to once again celebrate the impact of women in the field of jazz,” states Joan and Martin Messinger Dean Kate Sheeran. “I can’t think of a better way to spend a Saturday than to invite budding jazz musicians to Eastman, giving them the opportunity to learn from our esteemed faculty and visiting artists — all at the top of their game.”
The Friday evening concert is ticketed and the Saturday workshops — including lunch and snacks throughout the day — are free, but require advance registration. Saturday attendees will have access to discounted tickets for Carrington’s performance.
Tickets to all Eastman Presents concerts are on sale now and can be purchased online, in person at the Eastman Theatre Box Office (located at 433 East Main Street; hours: M-F 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.) or by calling 585-274-3000.

About Eastman School of Music:
The Eastman School of Music was founded in 1921 by industrialist and philanthropist George Eastman (1854–1932), founder of Eastman Kodak Company. It was the first professional school of the University of Rochester. Mr. Eastman’s dream was that his school would provide a broad education in the liberal arts as well as superb musical training.
More than 900 students are enrolled in the Collegiate Division of the Eastman School of Music—about 500 undergraduates and 400 graduate students. They come from almost every state, and approximately 23 percent are from other countries. They are taught by a faculty comprised of more than 170 highly regarded performers, composers, conductors, scholars, and educators. They are Pulitzer Prize winners, Grammy winners, Emmy winners, Guggenheim fellows, ASCAP Award recipients, published authors, recording artists, and acclaimed musicians who have performed in the world’s greatest concert halls. Each year, Eastman’s students, faculty members, and guest artists present more than 900 concerts to the Rochester community. Additionally, more than 1,700 members of the Rochester community, from young children through senior citizens, are enrolled in the Eastman Community Music School.
