Canadian Brass performs at Eastman

Canadian Brass joined the Eastman Wind Ensemble for a performance at the Eastman Theatre last night.
Prior to the show, we talked to Mark Scatterday, conductor of the Eastman Wind Ensemble, and Chuck Daellenbach, a member of Canadian Brass who’s also an Eastman School of Music alumnus.

On Friday, Eastman Philharmonia and conductor Brad Lubman will offer a powerhouse lineup of varied, bold symphonic statements. The orchestra will perform “Brio,” an explosive yet accessible work by Grammy winner and former Eastman professor Augusta Read Thomas (pictured), who will be the visiting composer as part of Eastman‘s weekly Symposium on composition. The program will also include the late Oliver Knussen’s “Flourish with Fireworks,” along with Claude Debussy’s evocative, orchestral masterwork “La Mer” and Dmitri Shostakovich’s emotionally visceral Piano Concerto No. 1.

Eastman students to perform at Kennedy Center

A group of students will be representing the Eastman School of Music at an upcoming performance at the John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts.
The Asha Quartet, which focuses on traditional chamber music, features Claire An, Robert Sanders and Aditi Prakash on violin, as well as Hannah Rubin on cello.
The saxophone-focused Scio Quartet features Uday Singh on soprano saxophone, Sibohan Plouffe on alto saxophone, Clancy Ellis on tenor saxophone and Michael Matthew on baritone saxophone.
Both quartets will perform at the Kennedy Center on February 18 as part of the Conservatory Project, which highlights young musicians. Each member is a student in the Bachelors of Music program at Eastman.

The worlds of movies, video games and music collide in a new show at the Eastman School of Music.
“Visual Music: An Evening of World-Premiere Film and Music Collaborations” is the culmination of work done by students and faculty at The Beal Institute under the Eastman School of Music‘s new “Media Composition” field of study.

Acclaimed composer Augusta Read Thomas is being welcomed back to Eastman School of Music where the Eastman Philharmonia will perform her composition “Brio.”
Thomas was an associate professor of composition at Eastman from 1993 until 2001. She is a Grammy Award winner and one of the most influential composers today. Thomas has been called “a true virtuoso composer” by The New Yorker. …

Soprano Kearstin Piper Brown recently made her main stage debut with San Francisco Opera as Clara in Heggie’s It’s A Wonderful Life. She also sang Barber’s Knoxville: Summer of 1915 with San José Chamber Orchestra and Arias, a multidisciplinary show at Rochester’s Lyric Theater. In 2019, she will make her debut with Opera Williamsburg as Pamina. Brown will be accompanied by pianist Edward Rothmel, who is currently pursuing his Doctorate of Musical Arts in Collaborative Piano at the Eastman School of Music and works as vocal coach and music director for Si parla, Si canta in Urbania, Italy.

Winners announced for 9th Bösendorfer and Yamaha USASU International Piano Competition

The third prize in the Bösendorfer competition went to Hungarian-American pianist Peter Klimo, 28, who received $5,000 and the bronze medal. Studying piano since the age of 9, Klimo is currently pursuing his Doctor of Musical Arts in Performance and Literature at the Eastman School of Music with Alan Chow.

Professor of composition, his program is called “The One, and the Many” featuring Renee Jolles, violin, Margaret Kampmeier, piano and sinfonietta ensemble. Morris has taught at various renowned universities across American include Yale University, and his many compositions have been performed around the world. 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 4 in Kilbourn Hall.
