Congratulations to Eastman student Jonathan Miller for having his new brass quintet, Freedom Suite, recently published by American Brass Press. The composition, which was premiered at this year’s Black History Month Recital in Kilbourn Hall, “is a three-movement reflection on the struggles people of African descent in America have faced in pursuit of gaining their freedom,” Miller says.
A third-year tuba student in the studio of Professor Justin Benavidez, Miller is an active arranger who has been commissioned to create works for a variety of instrumentation and has led the Eastman Tuba and Euphonium Ensemble in performances of his own arrangements. As a soloist, he has received recognition from organizations including the NAACP and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. His accomplishments also include being named a YoungArts winner with Distinction, winning the 2026 North East Regional Tuba Euphonium Conference (NERTEC) Student Solo Competition, and being named an S.E. Shires Rising Artist. Miller is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Music degree in Tuba Performance.
