The PhD in Music Theory is a rigorous, five-year program that trains candidates for an academic career of teaching and research. In addition to offering extensive pedagogical training and opportunities, the PhD prepares students to become world-class scholars. With a flexible and progressive curriculum, we introduce students to cutting-edge methodologies for the analysis of a wide range of music—Western and non-Western, common-practice and contemporary, classical and vernacular. The breadth of our faculty ensures in-house expertise in a range of music-theoretical topics, from cognition and computational modeling to analysis and aesthetics. The program places students at the center of a thriving research community, and a regular roster of distinguished speakers gives students additional first-hand access to cutting-edge scholarship. Our PhD graduates have accepted positions at leading institutions around the world.
