STUDENT PROFILE
Zhilin Zhang is a fourth-year PhD student in Music Education at the Eastman School of Music. She received her BM in Music Education from Henan University in China and her MM in Music Education from the University of Michigan. She has diverse teaching experience in both China and the United States, including two years teaching in a public school, one year in an early childhood music program, and more than eight years teaching flute. Most recently, she taught the Theory in Motion class at the Eastman Community Music School, where she received the Jack L. Frank Award for Excellence in Teaching. Zhilin’s research interests include cross-cultural music education, technology in music teaching and learning, and supporting marginalized students in music classrooms. Zhilin chose Eastman because to her, βThe entire faculty at Eastman has been tremendous, really supporting and catering to the research interests and needs of all doctoral students. Eastman also provided us with extensive opportunities for college teaching, presentations, scholarly publication, and performance.β A fun fact about Zhilin: βI play the Chinese flute (dizi) and perform with the Rochester Chinese Ensemble in the Greater Rochester area.β
