STUDENT PROFILE
Sven Joseph is a first-year Ph.D. student in the Musicology department at the Eastman School of Music. He earned a B.A. in Music from California State University, Sacramento, where he studied both percussion and piano while cultivating his interests in musicological research. In recent years, he has delivered a grant-supported presentation on extended techniques and Augenmusik in the music of George Crumb, the paper for which was selected for upcoming publication in UCLA’s student musicology journal MUSE. He has also engaged several Sacramento ensembles to produce program notes, including the Sacramento Philharmonic and Opera and Sinfonia Spirituosa, a baroque period ensemble. A former member of the Sacramento Choral Society and Orchestra, he maintains a continued relationship with the ensemble as a program notes author for their regular performance season. His research interests include aestheticism, philosophy, and the intersections of musical and political thought throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.
