The Rochester Celebrity Organ Recital Series launches its 2016-2017 season with a recital by American concert organist Scott Dettra at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, East Avenue, Rochester.

Dettra combines an active performance schedule with his post as Director of Music and organist at the Church of the Incarnation in Dallas, the country’s third largest Episcopal parish.  Previously, he has served as the Principal Organist and Associate Director of Music at Washington National Cathedral; Keyboard Artist of the Washington Bach Consort; Assistant Conductor of Washington’s Cathedral Society;  and has held positions at St. Paul’s in Washington, D.C., St. Mark’s in Philadelphia, and Trinity Church in Princeton.

Praised for the poetry, intensity, and musical elegance of his playing, Dettra has performed at Carmel Bach and Arizona Bach Festivals, the Bermuda Festival of the Performing Arts, and the Piccolo Spoleto Festival. He has appeared at national conventions of the American Guild of Organists, the Association of Anglican Musicians, and the Association of Lutheran Musicians.  His performances have been broadcast on American Public Media’s Pipedreams and Performance Today, the BBC’s Choral Evensong, and The New York Philharmonic: This Week.

Tickets to Dettra’s recital at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church are $12 general public, $10 Seniors and American Guild of Organists members, and $5 students.

Following his concert performance in Rochester, Dettra will give a master class to Eastman School of Music students from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, at Third Presbyterian Church, Rochester.

The Rochester Celebrity Organ Recital Series is sponsored by the Rochester Chapter of the American Guild of Organists, the Eastman School of Music, and WXXI. The series brings in artists who are performers of the highest caliber to perform recitals in local churches and conduct master classes with local students. Future concerts are scheduled for Feb. 17, 2017, with William Porter at 8 p.m. in Christ Church, Rochester, and April 21, 2017, with Vincent Dubois at 8 p.m. in Sacred Heart Cathedral, Flower City Park, Rochester.
