“Pianos for Peace” Project Unites Urban Rochester Community | Zachary Preucil

As of August 5, eight pianos have been made available in strategic locations around Rochester’s inner-city neighborhoods for anyone — child or grandparent, musician or non-musician — who wishes to play them. This innovative community project is called “Pianos for Peace,” and it owes its existence to Rochester native Marissa Balonon-Rosen, who is pursuing a degree in Urban Youth Studies at the University of Rochester as well as a Music Theory degree at the Eastman School of Music.
“What really interested me is the fact that we have the Eastman School of Music and we have so many people who are so into music, yet at the same time, there’s this huge disparity and there’s so many kids and parts of Rochester who never really have that exposure,” she says. “Here we have world-class musical outlets, yet there are some in the neighborhoods who have not had the same chance at experiencing the joy of playing an instrument.”
Couple celebrating 65 years of beautiful music together
The Louisville Courier-Journal 08/30/2013
When the Louisville Orchestra kicks off its new season Saturday with its Fanfara concert at the Kentucky Center for the Arts, there’s no question that one exceedingly musical couple will be in the audience. It’s Daniel McAninch, 88, retired principal oboist with the Louisville Orchestra — to name only one of his musical careers — and Betty McAninch, 87, a retired public school music teacher. They recently celebrated 65 musical and wedded years together.
The elder McAninches met at Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester in New York, from which they both graduated, after Daniel McAninch returned from serving in the Army Air Corps in World War II. He stayed on and also received a master’s degree and later a doctorate in musical arts.
