Great Expectations

If we agree that there is more to being a successful orchestra musician than showing up and playing, it might be helpful to define what we mean. What specifically is the role of a musician in an orchestra beyond playing the music? If we expect musicians to perform functions that have traditionally been done by management, such as raising money, shouldn’t this be included in the job description? In my article, Moving Beyond The Music: Why An Orchestra Musician’s Job Is Not Over After The Last Note I suggest that an organization is most successful when management and musicians have a clear understanding of their own well defined and often opposing roles.
