Job Posting: Director of the Institute for Music Leadership

Director of the Institute for Music Leadership
Eastman School of Music, University of Rochester

The Eastman School of Music invites applications for the position of Director of the Institute for Music Leadership, a senior leadership position reporting to the Dean.  Eastman is recognized nationally and internationally for the quality, breadth, and intensity of its music education and for the unique emphasis on artistry, scholarship, teaching, and leadership.  The Institute for Music Leadership serves as the hub of entrepreneurial activities at Eastman; it currently houses five divisions:

  • Catherine Filene Shouse Arts Leadership Program (ALP)
  • Careers and Professional Development
  • Center for Music Innovation and Engagement (CMIE)
  • Orchestra Musician Forum (Polyphonic.org)
  • Paul R. Judy Center for Applied Research

While the Institute for Music Leadership impacts Eastman students directly, through its sponsorship of robust course offerings in the ALP and support of local and national internships for undergraduate and graduate students, it also develops initiatives that impact the musical community at large.  Fostering emergent alternative ensembles, supporting professional orchestral musicians, and developing innovative online courses are only three examples of some of the initiatives recently undertaken, but the primary responsibility of the Director of the IML is to envision, execute, and steer the future course of innovative projects.

We encourage applications from individuals who are committed to preparing future musical leaders, creative thinkers, and entrepreneurs.  The successful candidate will be a visionary leader who is highly conversant with emerging innovative reforms, including effective applications of technology, and actively engaged in musical entrepreneurship.  Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills are essential, as is the ability to impart knowledge, collaborate, and work effectively with different constituencies.  A graduate degree in music is preferred, and at least five years of significant leadership and entrepreneurial experience is expected.

Compensation and benefits are commensurate with experience.  Review of applications begins on 24 October 2014.  To receive full consideration, please apply online and submit a letter of application, curriculum vitae, documentation of entrepreneurial activity within the past five years, and three current letters of recommendation to IMLsearch@esm.rochester.edu.
