Hello again from the Eastman School of Music!

For this month’s Tips and Tools for Music School we will be discussing physical health.

June Topic: Hearing Health and 5 Tips for the Healthy Musician
Hearing Health
For music students, hearing health is crucial to your continued development as a musician. It is important to understand the risk factors that may contribute to hearing damage and the preventative measures that students can take to safeguard their hearing health. The following video presentation discusses types of hearing damage, risk factors, and offers practical advice for music students to consider. View the video here.

One of the most important preventative tools used to preserve hearing health is earplugs. Did you know that students can receive a free set of earplugs through the Office of Student Life? Be sure to pick up your free earplugs during your first week on campus!

5 Tips for the Healthy Musician
Making music involves your whole body. Our Wellness at Eastman team would like to offer the following tips that you can incorporate into your daily routine and continue with as you begin your collegiate music studies:

1. Warm Up: Warming up off your instrument prior to practice prepares your body for activity and decreases your risk of overuse injuries. Warm up should be done about 15 minutes before practice or performance. Include: dynamic stretching, full body and specific muscle group movements, and exercises that increase heart rate.

2. Take Proper Practice Breaks: Practice intervals of 25-30 min with 5-10 min rest breaks, and no more than 4 hours total per day reduces the risk of overuse injuries. Pay special attention to repetition and difficulty of music. Plan for the progression of weekly and daily practice time increases. An increase of no more than 15-20% per week is recommended.

3. Cool Down: A short cool down after practice or performance helps return the body to its normal state including heart rate, breathing, and muscle tension and decreases risk of muscle soreness. Static stretching and slow elongation poses are beneficial to promote recovery.

4. Get Adequate Sleep: The average person needs 7-9 hours of sleep a night for healthy body and brain function. Inadequate sleep can result in musculoskeletal pain, difficulty concentrating and increased risk of injury. Limit screen time 1 hour before bed, keep a consistent sleep schedule even on the weekends, and establish a relaxing bedtime routine.

5. Plan Regular Exercise Into Your Day: This includes both cardio and full body strength training for 30 min 4-5x per week. Regular exercise improves blood flow and oxygenation to your tissues and brain, enhancing physical and mental endurance and resilience. It also improves your sleep and reduces your risk of overuse injuries.

Continue the Conversation
For more about the importance of physical health for a long musical career check out the following presentations from Wellness at Eastman team: Benefits of Warming Up and Cooling Down and Fueling the Performing Artist.  Wellness at Eastman regularly presents on topics that are focused on holistic musician health. When you arrive on campus, keep a look out for more of these helpful presentations throughout the year.

The University of Rochester has a highly trained staff of public safety professionals, as well as comprehensive policies and procedures to deal with emergencies. AlertUR is part of the comprehensive plan to provide emergency notification to the University of Rochester community of students, faculty, and staff. AlertUR uses e-mails, cell phones with domestic phone numbers, and other electronic devices to send out warnings of imminent danger. The alerts contain official University information when a crisis threatens the health and safety of people on or near University property. The names and campus e-mail addresses of all students are contained in the new system.

You are strongly encouraged to check personal data online at https://alert.rochester.edu/ and add additional numbers and e-mails in regular use. Additionally, the AlertUR website provides a frequently asked questions page. Parents, family members, and international phone numbers cannot not receive AlertUR notifications, but the University regularly sends out e-newsletters to parents, alumni, and friends of the University, using those e-communications to update families and friends on critical situations. They and other members of the University community also can go to the University’s emergency Web page located at www.rochester.edu/emergency. Take a Stand

For many years, the equipment in the practice rooms at Eastman has included a music stand. Sometimes, when you are in a hurry to find a practice room, you may find the music stand has wandered to another location. We recommend that everyone bring with them a portable (foldable) music stand, one that you can carry in your backpack or instrument case so that you are ready to practice at any time, without the need to spend extra practice time searching for a music stand.

You can purchase a music stand at the Eastman School Bookstore. If you want to reserve a music stand for purchase when you arrive on campus, call the Eastman Bookstore at 585-274-1399 or email the bookstore at bksrochestereastman@bncollege.com. You can “take a stand” and pay for it in the Miller Center building during regular store hours.
