TRAVEL AND LODGING INFORMATION

Travel

The Rochester area is served by the Greater Rochester International Airport (ROC), destination for a number of major airlines, including United, US Airways, American, Delta, Air Canada, Continental, and Northwest.  Two budget carriers also fly to the city: Jet Blue and Air Tran.  The airport itself is conveniently small, with just two concourses (A and B).  It generally takes much less time than at major airports to get in or out (though nothing is guaranteed of course).

Once your flight arrives, you have essentially two options for the trip downtown.  If you are staying at the Strathallan Hotel (see below), you can arrange for free pickup by the hotel shuttle service.  To do this, you need to inform the conference organizers in advance of your flight number and arrival time.  The hotel will then process the information for everyone and send shuttles to pick up groups at the appropriate times.  If you wish to use this service, you should send your flight information to Deanna Phillips in the Eastman musicology office by April 15.  While the shuttle drivers will try to minimize wait times, again no guarantees can be made.

It is also quite feasible to take a taxi from the airport.  The ride should cost something close to $20.

Lodging

The Strathallan Hotel will provide the primary accommodations for this conference.  Just one-and-a-half blocks from the site of the paper sessions—the Memorial Art Gallery (MAG)—the hotel is conveniently located for our activities.  The Strathallan has just completed the first phase of an elaborate renovation, with some rooms upgraded and the lobby remodeled.  I am hopeful it will provide an agreeable “home” during the conference.

The one quirk of the Strathallan is the designation of rooms not as “single” and “double,” but as “studio” and “one-bedroom.”  The difference is some additional free space in the one-bedroom (suite-like).  All rooms have refrigerators, microwaves, and coffee makers; most have a two-burner stove and sink as well.  The “studio” rooms can be reserved with either one or two beds, an option you should specify at reservation.  The “one-bedrooms” are all furnished with a single king-size bed, and most also have a sleeper sofa.  The rates for the two configurations—with or without the second bed—are $119 and $129 per night respectively.  Reservations should be made with the hotel directly, by calling (585) 461-5010.  To receive the SSCM rate, simply mention the “ESM—Society for Seventeenth-Century Music” conference.  Reservations must be made by March 23 to receive the discounted rate.  Official check-in time is 3 p.m., but the hotel has said they will try to have rooms ready for those they know are arriving earlier.

We have also reserved a small block of rooms at the less expensive East Avenue Inn, about three blocks from the MAG.  The facilities are basic, rather than elegant.  (The School does use this hotel regularly for audition days and other big events.)  You can see the location of the Inn here.  The reserved block consists primarily of single, non-smoking rooms at the rate of $64 per night.  Again, just mention the conference to receive our negotiated rate.
