Carl Czerny was born on February 21st, 1791 in Vienna, the city where he would spend his entire adult life. He came from a family of musicians; his early musical education was supervised by his father, a professional performer and music teacher. At the age of ten, Czerny began piano study with Beethoven, and made his public debut as a pianist in 1800. He earned public recognition and critical respect for his interpretations of Beethoven&#8217;s piano works, but soon lost interest in performance. Czerny is perhaps best known for his efforts as a piano teacher; his students included Karl Beethoven, Sigismund Thalberg, Stephen Heller, and, most notably, Franz Liszt. Although Czerny composed music in a variety of forms, his thousands of studies and exercises have generally been considered his most significant contributions. In addition to his pedagogical piano compositions, he wrote extensively on pedagogical subjects; his writings on music shed light on many aspects of nineteenth-century performance practice. Czerny died on July 15th, 1857.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Provenance<\/h4>\n<p>The collection was purchased at auction from Sotheby&#8217;s (London, UK) by agents J. and J. Lubrano on May 18th, 1995. The collection was purchased with funds from the John F. Flagg Endowment.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Scope and Content<\/h4>\n<p>The collection comprises proof copies, first editions, and other early editions of piano works by Carl Czerny, most having been annotated by the composer with corrections and marginal comments. The exemplars bear no indication as to their previous owner(s). In addition to knowledge of the printing of Czerny&#8217;s music, specifically, the collection offers insight into early nineteenth-century music printing in Vienna.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Restrictions and Use<\/h4>\n<p>There are no restrictions on the use of this collection.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Associations<\/h4>\n<p>A comparable collection of 19th-century piano music in the Ruth T. Watanabe Special Collections is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esm.rochester.edu\/sibley\/files\/E.-Maude-Wilson-Collection.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">E. Maude Wilson Collection<\/a>. Most of that collection&#8217;s holdings were bound into binder&#8217;s collections arranged around the composers&#8217; last names. Among the numerous composers represented in the collection are Beethoven, Czerny, Liszt, Raff, and Thalberg.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a id=\"Series\" name=\"Series\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>DESCRIPTION OF SERIES<\/h3>\n<h4>Series 1: Music<\/h4>\n<p>The series contains 53 proof copies of first and early editions of piano music by Carl Czerny, many annotated by the composer. The works are arranged by opus number. At the end of the Box 2 sequence are two imprints that have not been conclusively identified: one is a Fantasia without composer attribution, and the other is a transcription of the Prelude and Fugue, E major, BWV 566 by J. S. Bach, possibly transcribed by Czerny.
