GENRE Three one-act operas
LIBRETTO Il tabarro: Giuseppe Adami, after Didier Gold, La Houppelande

Suor Angelica: Giovacchino Forzano

Gianni Schicchi: Forzano, expanded from a few lines in Dante’s Inferno (xxx: 32-3, 42-5)

FIRST PERFORMED Metropolitan Opera House, New York, 4 December 1918
NOTES

Puccini was unable to attend the premiere of Il trittico in New York because of the war. He had composed the triptych as an inseparable whole and later expressed disappointment when theaters began dropping Il tabarro or Suor Angelica. Following the first and second editions of the triple bill (in 1918 and 1919), Puccini continued to revise the scores of the first two operas. Thereafter, Ricordi issued separate versions of all three operas. Except for a German edition in 1920, the one-acts were never again published in a single volume.
