Meet our Saxophone Players

Rowan Lynch image

Rowan Lynch is a third-year jazz alto saxophonist. Originally from northeastern Pennsylvania, he graduated from Ithaca High School in Ithaca, NY. Among his most important educational experiences are the Manhattan School of Music Precollege jazz program, Eastman Summer Jazz Studies, the Berklee Global Jazz Institute Workshop at the Newport Jazz Festival, and COTA CampJazz. Several of his main influences are Jackie McLean, Cannonball Adderley, and Eric Dolphy.


 

Lael Dratfield image

Lael Dratfield is a baritone saxophonist, woodwind doubler, and composer from South Hadley, Massachusetts. She has performed with a variety of prominent ensembles including the Beantown Swing Orchestra, the Massachusetts All-State Jazz Band, and the Eastman New Jazz Ensemble. She began studying saxophone at the age of 13 with saxophonist and composer Frank Newton and is currently studying with Charles Pillow at the Eastman School of Music pursuing a degree in Jazz Studies Saxophone Performance. In addition to studying performance, Lael is passionate about music history, arts leadership, and advocating for women in jazz. She believes music is a vital form of communication and should be accessible to all.


 

Stephanie Tateiwa image

Stephanie Tateiwa is a saxophonist and a woodwind doubler from Westchester, NY.  She is currently pursuing her undergraduate degree in Jazz Studies, as a student of Charles Pillow, and in Music Teaching and Learning at the Eastman School of Music.  

Stephanie has participated in programs such as the award-winning Jazz at Lincoln Center Youth Orchestra as the lead alto, NAfME All-National Honor Jazz Ensemble, All-State Wind Ensemble, Summer Jazz Academy, BUTI Tanglewood Wind Ensemble, and in Mannes Prep Philharmonic as the principal clarinet.  

Stephanie has been the recipient of awards including the Essentially Ellington Best Saxophone Award, Hudson Valley Music Club Student Awards, Concerto Competition Winner at the New England Music Camp, and Grand Prix Winner of Concert Festival on the classical piano. 

Stephanie has had the opportunity to study with her role models such as Allen Won, Ted Nash, Todd Stoll, Tatum Greenblatt, Alexa Tarantino, Joe Ravo, Gail Levinsky, David Sapadin, and Susan Fancher.  


 

Andre Weinberger image
 
Andre Weinberger is currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in Jazz Performance – Saxophone and Music Teaching and Learning at the Eastman School of Music, in the studio of Charles Pillow. A native of Maplewood, New Jersey, Andre has studied with Julius Tolentino, Mark Gross, Wayne Escoffery, and Dan Perez, and has played tenor in the New Jersey Youth Symphony Jazz Orchestra, the James Moody Jazz Orchestra, and the New Jersey All-State Jazz Ensemble. He is a graduate of both the Eastman Jazz Workshop and the Berklee Five-Week Jazz Program, to which he received a full scholarship as a “Newark Ambassador.”
 

Andre’s musical influences are eclectic, ranging from Hank Mobley and Sonny Stitt to Prince and Tower of Power. At Eastman, he hopes to develop as both a player and a music educator who can bring new energy and inclusivity to traditional genres.
