{"id":7,"date":"2012-06-12T13:52:01","date_gmt":"2012-06-12T17:52:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.esm.rochester.edu\/debussy\/?page_id=7"},"modified":"2020-06-10T16:03:37","modified_gmt":"2020-06-10T20:03:37","slug":"welcome","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.esm.rochester.edu\/debussy\/welcome\/","title":{"rendered":"Welcome!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-Small wp-image-8\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esm.rochester.edu\/debussy\/files\/Marie-headshot-335x502.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"335\" height=\"502\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.esm.rochester.edu\/debussy\/files\/Marie-headshot-335x502.jpg 335w, https:\/\/www.esm.rochester.edu\/debussy\/files\/Marie-headshot-500x750.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.esm.rochester.edu\/debussy\/files\/Marie-headshot-710x1065.jpg 710w, https:\/\/www.esm.rochester.edu\/debussy\/files\/Marie-headshot-250x375.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.esm.rochester.edu\/debussy\/files\/Marie-headshot-100x150.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.esm.rochester.edu\/debussy\/files\/Marie-headshot-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.esm.rochester.edu\/debussy\/files\/Marie-headshot-170x255.jpg 170w, https:\/\/www.esm.rochester.edu\/debussy\/files\/Marie-headshot-240x360.jpg 240w, https:\/\/www.esm.rochester.edu\/debussy\/files\/Marie-headshot-234x351.jpg 234w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 335px) 100vw, 335px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2192 Marie Rolf Reflects on \u201cThe Prismatic Debussy\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Prismatic Debussy<\/strong>, a festival in honor of Claude Debussy&#8217;s birth 150 years ago, celebrates his innovative and multifaceted <em>\u0153uvre<\/em>.&nbsp; In concerts, lectures, and master classes presented over three weeks, we explore a wide range of repertoire, including beloved masterpieces, such as the orchestral <em>Nocturnes<\/em>, later compositions that are not frequently performed, such as <em>Le Martyre de saint S\u00e9bastien<\/em>, and works that secured Debussy&#8217;s reputation for posterity, namely <em>Pell\u00e9as et M\u00e9lisande<\/em>, as well as early songs that have just been discovered and reconstructed.&nbsp; In addition, we will have the special opportunity to hear newly composed works that are inspired by Debussy.&nbsp; In each facet of the festival, our focus will shift to different spectral colors within our prismatic view\u2014from extravagant works for large ensembles to intimate chamber music to pieces based on text, including opera and <em>m\u00e9lodies<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Taking our cue from Debussy&#8217;s notorious rants against the rigid and stale academic traditions of the Paris Conservatoire, we aim to present his works in fresh and imaginative ways.&nbsp; On 13 October, Marie Rolf vividly sets the stage for the compositions performed on the opening Gala Concert with lavish video projections, fascinating anecdotes, and excerpts from Debussy&#8217;s own writings.&nbsp; Musica Nova offers <em>The Debussy Project<\/em> on 17 October, presenting new works by Eastman composers, inspired by Debussy&#8217;s piano prelude, &#8220;Des pas sur la neige.&#8221;&nbsp; The PRISM concert on 20 October features transcriptions of Debussy&#8217;s works, including his own arrangement of &#8220;Minstrels&#8221; for violin and piano, the manuscript of which is housed in the Sibley Music Library of the Eastman School of Music.&nbsp; Artist P. Craig Russell&#8217;s illustrations of <em>Pell\u00e9as et M\u00e9lisande<\/em> will be projected on 26 October, accompanied by Matthew Brown and Dariusz Terefenko&#8217;s original arrangement for an eclectic chamber ensemble, and the day before, on 25 October, P.
