Hayley Grainger

Hayley Grainger has been performing with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra in the position of Second Flute/Piccolo since September 2019, when she also began teaching at the Eastman Community School of Music.

Over the past year, Hayley has found herself equally at home performing as a soloist. She was recently awarded Third Prize in the 2021 National Flute Association Young Artist competition and named Winner of the 2021 Cedar Luke Young Artist competition, where she performed a program of works by Allison Loggins-Hull, Valerie Coleman and Adolphus Hailstork. In February 2021, Hayley collaborated with flutist, Allison Parramore, to present the “Raise Their Voices” recital for the Upper Midwest and Rochester Flute Associations, which hosted a program of composers including Valerie Coleman, Allison Loggins-Hull, Rhonda Larson, Katherine Hoover and Cecile Chaminade.

As an orchestral musician, Hayley previously held the position of Second Flute/Piccolo with the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera. Additionally, she has performed as a guest with the Knoxville Symphony, Huntsville Symphony, Midland-Odessa Symphony and Chorale, Finger Lakes Opera and Chattanooga Bach Choir. She has spent her summers performing at the Aspen Music Festival, Brevard Music Center, and National Symphony Orchestra Summer Music Institute.

Previously, Hayley has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the William H. Grass prize winner in the James Pappoutsakis Memorial Competition, Co-winner of the Boston Woodwind Society Doriot Dwyer Flute Competition, Co-winner of the Boston Philharmonic Youth Orchestra Concerto Competition, and finalist in the New York Flute Club Competition.

Hayley is greatly indebted to her teachers and mentors, Linda Toote, Marianne Gedigian, Elizabeth Rowe and Rebecca Gilbert. Hayley graduated valedictorian summa cum laude from Boston University’s College of Fine Arts in 2013. During her time in Boston, she cherished being a member of the Boston Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, playing tours of Germany, Switzerland, Prague, Spain and Carnegie Hall. After her time in Boston, Hayley served as Marianne Gedigian’s Teaching Assistant while completing her Master’s degree at the University of Texas at Austin.

Hayley has played on Haynes flutes since 2008 and currently plays on a rose gold Haynes Fusion.
