Jung Choi

Oboist Jung Choi, a native of South Korea, has quickly established a career in both performing and teaching. She was twice given an honorable mention as a finalist in the Gillet-Fox International Competition for oboe and started teaching and giving master classes at the collegiate level in 2006.

Having made her concerto debut at the age of 16, she has since performed as a soloist with the Seoul Yego Orchestra, SNU wind ensemble, Buchoen Youth Philharmonic, Seoul Youth Philharmonic, Seoul Chamber Orchestra and Eastman Philharmonia. She has also appeared internationally as a chamber musician in Germany, France, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Japan.

While working on her master’s degree at the Eastman School of Music, she was appointed the English horn player of the Binghamton Philharmonic, also assisting as an oboist. She also taught at Nazareth College and Roberts Wesleyen College in Rochester, NY. After graduating from Eastman, she was appointed the assistant principal of the Korean Symphony Orchestra and gave as many as 90 concerts annually. She also taught oboe at the prestigious Seoul National University, her alma mater.

As an avid chamber musician, she is a member of the Winds, a wind ensemble; Piri, an oboe ensemble; and Sunyul, a woodwind quintet. She was invited as principal oboist to the Daegwanryoung Music Festival, Incheon and Arts Festival, and Malaysia Festival orchestras.

In addition to classical music, she has interest in other genres and has recorded music for movies, musicals, and K-pop songs. She also performed oboe in collaboration with a poet giving a reading on Korean national television.

She is currently pursuing a doctorate degree in oboe performance at Eastman under Mr. Richard Killmer. She also serves as his teaching assistant and as an intern at the Eastman Community Music School.
