Concert Insiders

These 60 minute audit-only lectures offer historical context and informal musical analysis of works programmed on upcoming Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra concerts. Live demonstrations, audio/visual examples and class discussion help uncover the meaning of music in a social setting.

February 27 – Mahler Symphony no. 7 – This class will explore how Mahler’s music is full of intensely poetic and personal meaning. As he was facing the turn of the 20th century, he felt the pressure to experiment more and more with his music – and the result was his 7th Symphony, labeled as one of the most adventurous he had ever written.

March 6 – Shostakovich Symphony no. 10 – If high paced, action-packed music isn’t what you expect from a symphony, it’s time to give Shostakovich’s 10th Symphony a try. Composed just after the death of Josef Stalin, Shostakovich’s 10th Symphony depicts the manic anger of the ruler and the struggle of artists and general citizens under his boot. This lecture will cover the historical circumstances of the piece, along with the messages encoded in the music.
