{"id":12,"date":"2011-08-10T09:36:01","date_gmt":"2011-08-10T13:36:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.esm.rochester.edu\/classpianonew\/?page_id=12"},"modified":"2025-12-13T13:43:39","modified_gmt":"2025-12-13T18:43:39","slug":"audition-information","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.esm.rochester.edu\/classpiano\/audition-information\/","title":{"rendered":"Class Piano Placement Audition Information for Fall semester, 2026."},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Results of evaluations of submitted audition recordings will be posted upon evaluation.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In-person auditions will occur in late August 2026.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>If you have had <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">NO<\/span> prior piano experience, you were automatically placed in PCL 101 (this is the 1st semester of piano instruction: there is no need to submit a recording).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>If you have had some experience and believe you should not be placed in the introductory-level PCL 101 course, you should prepare a recorded audition.\u00a0 Before doing that, read the Course Objectives below to see what level you might be qualified for.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Your recorded audition should consist of:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>ONE major and\/or one minor scale and arpeggio, hands together, 2 octaves (student\u2019s choice of key)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>ONE harmonization of a short melody that uses keyboard style:\u00a0 3 note chord in RH, single note in LH, with pedal; (see examples for <a title=\"info for 102\" href=\"https:\/\/www.esm.rochester.edu\/classpiano\/102-audition-info\/\">102<\/a>\/<a title=\"103 info\" href=\"https:\/\/www.esm.rochester.edu\/classpiano\/103-audition-information\/\">103<\/a>\/<a title=\"104\" href=\"https:\/\/www.esm.rochester.edu\/classpiano\/104-audition-information\/\">104<\/a>); then select a melody from attached folders.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>a performance of TWO SOLOS in contrasting styles, selected from folders in <a title=\"info for 102\" href=\"https:\/\/www.esm.rochester.edu\/classpiano\/102-audition-info\/\">102<\/a>\/<a title=\"103 info\" href=\"https:\/\/www.esm.rochester.edu\/classpiano\/103-audition-information\/\">103<\/a>\/<a title=\"104\" href=\"https:\/\/www.esm.rochester.edu\/classpiano\/104-audition-information\/\">104<\/a>)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>If you have access to a piano or electronic keyboard, please prepare a recording of the above material and upload it within your orientation portal\u00a0at the bottom of the page\u00a0under Piano Video Upload, click \u201cEdit Portfolio\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>You can make a simple recording with your phone, as there\u2019s no need for a high-quality recording.\u00a0 You also do not need to worry about the quality of your instrument, as we understand that not everyone will have access to a concert grand piano over the summer \u2013 an upright piano, or even an electric keyboard, will suffice.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>If you do not have access to a piano, and If you cannot submit a recording in advance we cannot guarantee placement in the appropriate PCL course for the Fall semester, but rest assured you will have plenty of opportunities to take the required courses during your time at Eastman.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Course objectives: PCL 101-104<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>PCL 101: \u00a0students with NO prior training in piano will be placed in PCL 101. Major technical focus: all white key major scales and corresponding arpeggios, 2 octaves, HT <em>Text<\/em>:\u00a0 KEYBOARD MUSICIANSHIP, Book 1 (Lyke\/Caramia; Stipes Publishing Co.) 11<sup>th<\/sup> edition, 2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>PCL 102: \u00a0students with <em>some<\/em> prior training in piano (see <a title=\"102 Audition information\" href=\"https:\/\/www.esm.rochester.edu\/classpiano\/102-audition-info\/\">102 Audition information<\/a>) Major technical focus: all white key minor scales (all 3 forms) and corresponding arpeggios, 2 octaves, HT; review all white key major scales <em>Text<\/em>: \u00a0KEYBOARD MUSICIANSHIP, Book 1 (Lyke\/Caramia; Stipes Publishing Co.) 11<sup>th<\/sup> edition, 2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>PCL 103: \u00a0students with 1-2 years of study (see<a title=\"103 audition information\" href=\"https:\/\/www.esm.rochester.edu\/classpiano\/103-audition-information\/\"> 103 Audition information<\/a>) Major technical focus: all black key major scales, and corresponding arpeggios 2 octaves, HT; review all white key major and minor scales and arpeggios <em>Text<\/em>: \u00a0KEYBOARD MUSICIANSHIP, Book 2 (Lyke\/Caramia; Stipes Publishing Co.) 11<sup>th<\/sup> edition, 2020<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>PCL 104: \u00a0Students with 2 or more years of study (see <a title=\"104 Audition information\" href=\"https:\/\/www.esm.rochester.edu\/classpiano\/104-audition-information\/\">104 Audition information<\/a>) Major technical focus: all black key minor scales (harmonic form) and corresponding arpeggios, 4 octaves, HT; review all black key major scales and arpeggios <em>Text<\/em>: \u00a0KEYBOARD MUSICIANSHIP, Book 2 (Lyke\/Caramia; Stipes Publishing Co.) 11<sup>th<\/sup> edition, 2020<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>If a student feels he or she desires to test out of PCL requirements (through 104 level), the easiest way to proceed is to perform this test for me in person at the beginning of the Fall semester.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Please study the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esm.rochester.edu\/classpiano\/testpcl104\/\">PCL 104 Proficiency<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>When ready to take it, contact me to arrange a time (at the beginning of the Fall semester.\u00a0 If successful, the student will be exempted fro PCL 101-104 and can elect to take PCL 105.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Course objectives:\u00a0 PCL 105\/106<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Students with 3 or more years of study should consult <a title=\"105-106 Course descriptions\" href=\"https:\/\/www.esm.rochester.edu\/classpiano\/pcl105106\/\">105-106 Course descriptions<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>PCL 105: \u00a0Major technical focus: all major and minor scales and arpeggios up to 3#s, 3bs, 4 octaves, HT; Private lessons focus on 3 pieces: from Baroque, Classic, and Romantic <em>Text<\/em>: \u00a0a <em>scale\/arpeggio<\/em> <em>fingering guide<\/em> will be provided<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>PCL 106: \u00a0Major technical focus: ALL major and minor scales and arpeggios completed, 4 octaves, HT; Private lessons focus on 3 pieces: from Impressionistic and Contemporary <em>Text<\/em>: \u00a0a <em>scale\/arpeggio<\/em> <em>fingering guide<\/em> will be provided.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Students with 4 or more years of study\u2014or are at a level above PCL 106\u2014will most likely be exempted from class piano requirements.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Piano Class Placement Results<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Results will be e-mailed to you before registration and posted on ESM\/Registrar\u2019s home page: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esm.rochester.edu\/registrar\/\">https:\/\/www.esm.rochester.edu\/registrar\/\u00a0<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>During registration for new students, you will then be able to add the appropriate piano class section.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>If you are placed in a level you believe is not correct, the option of a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.esm.rochester.edu\/classpiano\/proficiency-tests\/\">Proficiency Test<\/a>\u00a0is available<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Students with 4 or more years of study\u2014or are at a level above PCL 106\u2014will most likely be exempted from class piano requirements.\u00a0 If you are in this category and would like to elect further piano study, please\u00a0 contact Professor <a href=\"mailto:tgurevich@esm.rochester.edu\">Tamari Gurevich Hill <\/a> regarding Secondary Piano Auditions.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;] Results of evaluations of submitted audition recordings will be posted upon evaluation.
