Fall Arrival Information for International Students

For fall 2021 the Eastman School of Music will return to a typical semester with all classes held on campus at full classroom capacity. We’ve heard from many international students who have successfully scheduled and completed their visa appointments and are hopeful that nearly all students will be able to join us on campus for fall.

New international students can move into the Student Living Center on Wednesday, August 18, while returning students living on campus can begin moving in on Saturday, August 21. Classes for the fall 2021 semester will begin on Wednesday, August 25.

We know there are many questions, so we wanted to provide as much information as possible on this website.  Please check back often, as we will update it throughout the summer.

Quarantine

Asymptomatic travelers arriving in Rochester from another country are no longer required to quarantine upon arrival.

COVID-19 Vaccination

The University requires all students to be vaccinated for COVID-19. See the University Health Services COVID-19 page for instructions on submitting your vaccination documentation prior to your arrival on campus. The University will follow New York State and CDC guidance for COVID-19 vaccines, and will recognize students as fully vaccinated who have received vaccines approved for emergency use by the CDC, which currently includes the vaccines listed on the World Health Organization (WHO) emergency use list (anything checked as EOI accepted on the Status of COVID-19 Vaccines within WHO EUL/PQ evaluation process PDF).

We understand that you may not be eligible for a vaccine in your home country prior to traveling to Rochester. In that case, please plan to arrive on campus for the start of the fall semester on your appointed move-in day and a vaccine will be provided. Students being vaccinated upon arrival are required to wear masks until fully vaccinated, which is two weeks after their last shot.

Visa Delays and Remote Study

If your arrival is postponed due to visa delays, we will provide online instruction until you arrive on campus. However, this will only be approved in the case of visa delays or extreme travel challenges, as the expectation is that you will travel to Rochester as soon as your situation is resolved.

If you are encountering visa delays or extreme travel challenges, please fill out the International Student Late Arrival Request Form and your request will be reviewed for a remote fall start. Note that you must supply supporting documentation of your specific visa or travel issue. Acceptable documentation includes a screenshot of the US consulate website or confirmation email with your visa appointment, wait times, or closure information.

You may begin classes online while awaiting receipt of your visa and transition to in-person studies if you are able to arrive by November 7. Per temporary US immigration guidance, international students arriving for the first time on their F-1 student visa must arrive by November 7 to meet the in-person requirements classes. If you are unable to arrive by this date, you will need to complete the semester remotely and plan to arrive for spring.

Flight Delays

If you plan to be on campus, but not on the day of your scheduled move-in (August 20 for returning students), you should also complete the International Student Late Arrival Request Form to be reviewed for permission to arrival late.
