July 5/Saturday, 9 a.m.–4 p.m.; plus concert at 4 p.m. in Messinger Hall
Former Count Basie drummer Rich Thompson shares over 20 years of teaching and performing experience in this one-day event for students and teachers alike. This intensive day of drum set styles stems from the jazz tradition and includes swing, Latin, bebop, and modern elements as they relate to the field of music today. The topic of extra percussion and hand drumming is included in a clinic with conga drumming great Tony Padilla. This workshop provides all drummers the unique opportunity to interact and perform through master classes, and dialogue forum, culminating in a late afternoon concert. Please bring a stickbag complete with brushes and mallets for hands-on training.

This workshop for beginning and intermediate level harpists (high school to adult) provides individual and ensemble instruction, music theory, and orchestral repertory classes for pedal and lever harpists. Highlights include concerts and other performance opportunities with Eastman School faculty and guest artists.

Summer Trumpet Seminar

July 12 / Saturday, 9 a.m.–4 p.m.This workshop will address the question that every trumpet player has asked at one time or another: How can I play higher notes? Rochester Philharmonic trumpeter and jazz recording artist Herb Smith will discuss and demonstrate the advantages to playing with the Tongue Controlled Embouchure in both jazz and classical settings. Herb will play recordings of trumpet players from jazz and classical idioms who played with this lost technique, including Cat Anderson, Maurice André, Bud Herseth, Louis Armstrong, Gunther Betz, Harry James, Ernie Shavers, and Harry Glantz.

The View from the Top: A Piccolo Workshop

August 4-6/Monday-Wednesday, 5:30-8:30 p.m.
This intensive workshop is for flutists interested in developing their piccolo skills and technique. Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra Piccoloist Jan Angus will share her 20 years of experience in the intricacies of piccolo playing. The sessions are performance-oriented, with a format of demonstration, group playing and master class. Topics covered during sessions will include piccolo basics including embouchure, warm-ups, vocalises, intonation, and alternate fingerings, applied to both solo and orchestral repertoire.
