This collaborative program allows students to design their own personalized schedules based on their unique academic interests and musical talents. Students attend a Rochester Scholars course on the University’s River Campus and eat lunch in a campus dining hall, then ride a shuttle to the Eastman School for their afternoon class (or vice versa).

This one-week course will provide insight into the diverse world of electronic music with an emphasis on basic audio technology and software. Students will learn to record, edit, and produce CDs of their own performances which can be used for auditions, scholarship application, and general promotion. Students will become familiar with various types of audio hardware including microphones, mixing boards and MIDI controllers; as well as software including Audacity, Cubase, and a basic introduction to computer music notation (Sibelius). No prior knowledge of recording or programming is needed to be successful in this course, though basic computer skills are encouraged.
The scope of this class will be beyond any one software application, musical trend, or audio technology. Bill Cahn, Ruth Cahn, directors
Bill Cahn, of Nexus, is an adjunct faculty member at the Eastman School of Music. Ruth Cahn is the percussion instructor for Eastman Community Music School. Both Ruth and Bill were members of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra for many years.
If you are already a percussionist OR if you have always wanted to be – you would enjoy “Got to Drum”. You do not need to be able to read music, but be eager to try playing rhythms and patterns by listening. If you can already read music, that skill will certainly be well used. The program for students entering grades 6-9 focuses on hand drumming on world percussion instruments and will incorporate rhythms from many cultures. Drum ensembles, drum circles, improvisation, body percussion, and “found instrument” ensembles are likely program components. The program will include basic exposure to the full range of orchestral/band percussion instruments – snare drum, timpani and keyboard percussion. You may not be able to stop drumming! If you already have a favorite hand drum, please bring it. We will furnish drums for others. We can only accept 15 students, so apply early.
