Monday–Friday 8 a.m.–5:30 p.m., plus evening concerts;
Saturday, 9 a.m.–noon
This internationally acclaimed program is for students currently in grades 9–12 who are seriously considering a career in music. Our highly individualized program emphasizes solo performance (all orchestral instruments, piano, organ, voice, or composition). Music Horizons is for students of advanced performance levels who will work well in a focused environment. Students study with members of Eastman’s Community Music School faculty and members of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. Composers are offered opportunities to have their works performed, and frequently recorded, by other students.
The program includes:
- Two private lessons of one hour duration per week
- Weekly solo performance repertory class
- A career seminar including individual career interviews and professional musician guest speakers
- Three levels of theory and two levels of ear training
- A choice of History of Western Music, Analysis of Western Music, or World Music
- Small ensembles for all wind, brass, strings, and percussion
- Basic voice or piano class for non-vocalists or non-pianists
Concerts:
- Chamber – Thursday, July 31 at 2 and 7 p.m.
- Vocal Ensemble – Friday, Aug 1 at 10 a.m.
- Solo – Friday,August 1 at 2 and 7 p.m.
- Final solo performance and chamber music concerts are held in acoustically magnificent Kilbourn Hall. Performances will be recorded, and each student will receive a CD.
How to Apply:

Applications must be postmarked by May 23, 2008. Accepted applicants must confirm attendance in 48 hrs.An Audition Tape or CD (10–15 min.) should include étude, sonata/concerto movement, or solo composition representing two centuries (if possible). Percussion tapes/CDs must include snare, timpani, and keyboards. Composers should submit scores and recordings, if available, for review. Applications and tapes will be reviewed within 48 hours of receipt.
We recommend that any Rochester area students stay in the Student Living Center, so that they may participate fully in the experience of being a part of this outstanding peer group.
A complete application and medical form must be submitted. A recommendation from your current ensemble or private teacher, and a musical resume including recent solo and ensemble music, honors, and awards are also required.

This intensive two-week program, for highly skilled students currently in grades 9–12, is strongly recommended for students planning to audition for Eastman’s Bachelor of Music degree program in Jazz Studies. All students will benefit from working with the faculty, many of whom are members of Eastman’s renowned Jazz Studies and Contemporary Media Department:

Audition Tape or CD:
(5 -7 minutes maximum) Three contrasting pieces (i.e. bebop tune, standard, ballad).Recorded examples to include: improvised solos; accompanying skills—walking bass, comping, etc. Drums: four recorded examples including: medium tempo swing with trading fours; ballad with brushes; up-tempo swing; Latin. Recordings can be with or without combo.A complete application and medical form must be submitted. A recommendation from your current ensemble or private teacher is also required.

High School Wind Ensemble Workshop

August 4-8/Monday–Friday, 1–4 p.m.
Room: Messinger OneThis five-day intensive Wind Ensemble Workshop is for students currently in grades 8-12. In addition, college students who reside in the Rochester area and are music majors or minors may enroll in the class without cost to assist in sectional preparation and perform with the students. Mr. Tiberio will take time to work with college Music Education majors in preparing this ensemble for a performance. The class is offered to Level 5 and 6 NYSSMA soloists on all wind instruments and percussion. A concert on Friday afternoon will represent the culmination of the week’s exploration of some contemporary and traditional works for wind ensemble or symphonic band. Instrumentation may be limited in certain sections, so early enrollment is encouraged.
