Historical Sketch
The scrapbooks in this collection are the attempts of various public relations, external affairs, and/or development offices to maintain newspaper and article clippings on an annual basis that document the affairs of the Eastman School of Music and its students and faculty.
The Eastman School of Music began operations in 1921 after its construction under the patronage of George Eastman. The School was built for the training of amateur and professional musicians. The large theater (Eastman Theater) that is part of the complex was intended for the development of music appreciation among Rochestarians (initially through musical accompaniment to silent films), and has been used to this day by students, community organizations, and visiting groups. A smaller concert hall (Kilbourn Hall) has also been used for student, faculty, and public concerts throughout the School’s existence. The Eastman School of Music has provided university-level degrees as part of the University of Rochester, and has also provided musical instruction to the Rochester community.
Provenance
The scrapbooks were gathered in chronological order by year by the departments which preceded the present-day Office of Institutional Advancement of the Eastman School of Music.
Scope and Content
The scrapbooks contain newspaper and article clippings that include Eastman School performance announcements, performance reviews, articles on students, faculty, and School- related issues, and Eastman Theater concerts (including some non-Eastman School performances). The following gives a sample of represented newspapers and journals (non- comprehensive): Democrat and Chronicle, Times Union, The Journal, The Herald, Musical America, Musical Courier, Musical Digest, Musical Leader, Musical West, Diapason.
These scrapbooks are valuable in reference to the following topics (non-comprehensive): the history of the Eastman School of Music to 1974, ESM alumni general interest, musical performances in Rochester from 1921 to 1974, Eastman Theater/ Kilbourn Hall events from 1921 to 1974.
