Biographical Sketch
Alfred Spouse was a prominent local music educator and director of music for Rochester Public Schools. He organized and conducted many amateur choirs locally and was the director of the choir of the Baptist Temple and other local churches. He was an adjunct member of the faculty of Eastman School, Juilliard, and other institutions. He retired in 1955.
Provenance
The albums were donated by Mrs. Gordon Kelly, step-daughter of Spouse, in 1975. They were compiled in honor of Spouse’s retirement in 1955.
Scope and Content
The albums contain photographs and testimonial letters from individuals prominent in local and national music education. One album contains many unidentified photographs of what were apparently friends of Spouse and members of his staff or coworkers.
Associations
Watanabe Special Collections also possesses two scrapbooks of Clarence Bilhorn, a local choir director, who was active during Spouse’s tenure.
