Thelma Biracree Schnepel operated the Thelma Biracree School
of Ballet in Rochester, New York, in association with the Eastman
School of Music during the latter's early years. She participated
in the Eastman School's Festivals of American Music from the
1930s to 1950, as a choreographer and dance instructor for the
festivals' ballet performances.
The collection of Thelma Biracree Schnepel's annotated ballet scores was presented by Schnepel in 1985, with the encouragement and assistance of Elizabeth Purvis.
The collection contains 34 ballet scores used as a part of Howard Hanson's Festivals of American Music at the Eastman School of Music. Most of the scores are annotated in pencil with choreographic notes by Thelma Biracree Schnepel. The material is pertinent to the study of the history of the Institute of American Music and the study of dance and choreography.
There are no restrictions on the use of this collection, other than the usual copyright regulations.
The collections of Sibley Music Library possess many individually cataloged scores and recordings of music performed at the Festivals of American Music. Identification of these works is possible through the printed catalog, American Composers' Concerts and Festivals of American Music 1925-1971: Cumulative Repertoire, a copy of which has been included with this collection. In addition, the Eastman School of Music Archives contains materials of related interest including programs for the Festivals of American Music. The Library's Special Collections and the Eastman School Archives also possess individual collections of interest, including those of Howard Hanson and Burrill Phillips.
The series contains 34 ballet scores, both manuscripts and
reproductions. Most are annotated with choreographic notes by
Thelma Biracree Schnepel. The scores are arranged alphabetically
by composer.
