Biography: Martin J. Fleming (ca1845-1918) was apparently an amateur scholar of the violin. Little more is known of him than the facts that he was a medical doctor who lived in New York City and compiled a catalog of his library of violin music and an incomplete dictionary of violin and bow makers.
Provenance: The Library acquired the scrapbook in 1923 along with other items from the O.G. Sonneck library.
Scope and Content: The scrapbook contains clippings relating to the violin and violinists from the years 1889-1891, with the anomolous addition of a few items from the late 1830's.
Associations: Among the rare books collection are manuscript copies, apparently in Fleming's hand, of his dictionary and library catalog.
