Biography: Leopold Godowsky (1870-1938) was born in Vilnius but spent most his career in the United States and became a naturalized citizen. He was friend and associate of a large number of prominent musicians of his time. He was a very successful pianist until suffering a stroke in 1930, at which time he turned to composition and arranging other composers' works.
Provenance: The items in the collection were received in 1985 from two donors, Frankish R. Styles and Leopold Godowsky III.
Scope and Content: The collections contains some original manuscripts and many photocopies of manuscripts and proofs of original compositions and arrangements by Leopold Godowsky.
Associations: Watanabe Special Collections holds manuscript collections of several twentieth-century composers, mostly related to Eastman School or American music.
