Biography: Paul Henry Lang (1901-1991) was an eminent Hungarian-born American musicologist. He was on the faculty of Columbia University and served as editor of The Musical Quarterly from 1954 to 1973. During the last several years as editor, Lang was assisted by his colleague and prot?g?, Christopher Hatch, who succeeded Lang as editor of the journal from 1974-1977.
Provenance: The correspondence was generated primarily as communications relating to publications in Musical Quarterly. Christopher Hatch donated the collection in 1998.
Scope and Content: The correspondence deals with musicological and editorial issues relating to publications in The Musical Quarterly. The bulk of the material is from the early 1970's. Some items of biographical interest relating to Lang are also included.
Associations: Watanabe Special Collections holds a collection of scrapbooks of Paul Henry's Lang's articles on musical life in new York City from 1954-1963. SC1996.6.
