Biography: Frederick W. Westphal graduated from Eastman School of Music with a master's degree in 1939 and PhD in 1948. He is professor emeritus of the California State University. In 1958 till 1993 he held the position of consulting editor in music with the William C. Brown Co., Publishers. During this time he was responsible for the publication of numerous highly successful texts in public school and higher education music education.
Provenance: The collection was donated by Frederick W. Westphal.
Scope and Content: The collection represents one copy of every book published by William C. Brown Co. under the editorship of Westphal. Considering the highly successful nature of the texts, the collection represents the bulk of the work of a major music education publisher under the guidance of Westphal and its impact on music education in the United States. In that a large percentage of the authors are also graduates of the Eastman School of Music, it also constitutes some indicate of the School's influence and impact on music education in this country.
Associations: Watanabe Special Collections also holds the archives of the Sengstack Group of music publishers and is the holder on deposit of the G. Schirmer Archives and the Universal Edition/Kurt Weill Archives.
