Biography: Ernest Bloch (1880-1959) was born in Switzerland and moved to the United States in 1917, teaching at the Mannes School in new York. He held other major appointments until 1930. From 1930 to 1939 he lived mainly in Switzerland, but returned thereafter and settled in Oregon before moving on to Berkeley, California. He taught briefly at the Eastman School of Music (1924-25). His compositions are generally highly regarded.
Provenance: The collection was purchased from J.J. Lubrano in March 1998 and was created in the early 1970's by the musicologist Ernest Lubin for an uncompleted festschrift in honor of Bloch.
