Carl Czerny (1791-1857). Carl Czerny was born February 21,
1791 in Vienna, where he spent his entire adult life. He came
from a family of musicians; his early musical education was
supervised by his father, a professional performer and music
teacher. At the age of ten, Czerny began piano study with
Beethoven, and made his public debut as a pianist in 1800. He
earned public recognition and critical respect for his
interpretations of Beethoven's piano works, but soon lost
interest in performance. Czerny is perhaps best known for his
efforts as a piano teacher; his students included Karl Beethoven,
Sigismund Thalberg, Stephen Heller, and, most notably, Franz
Liszt. Although Czerny composed music in a variety of forms, his
thousands of studies and exercises have generally been considered
his most significant contributions. In addition to his
educationally-oriented compositions, he wrote extensively on
pedagogical subjects, and his writings on music shed light on
many aspects of nineteenth-century performance practice. Czerny
died on July 15, 1857.
Publisher's proofs and early editions, no indication of original owner. Purchased from Sotheby's London music auction by agent J & J Lubrano, 18 May 1995. The collection was purchased with funds from the John F. Flagg endowment.
The collection contains a number of proof copies of Czerny's piano works, extensively annotated by the composer with corrections and marginal remarks, as well as many first and early editions. In addition to knowledge of the printing of Czerny's music, specifically, the collection offers insight into early nineteenth century music printing in Vienna.
There are no restrictions on the use of this collection.
Sibley Music Library contains the E. Maude Wilson Collection, a large collection of nineteenth century early edition piano music, most bound in volumes by composer. Composers represented in the collection include Czerny, Liszt, Beethoven, Thalberg, and Raff, among others.
The series contains 53 proof copies of first and early editions of piano music by Carl Czerny, many annotated by the composer. The works are arranged by opus number.
