Competition Format

 

Twenty-four competitors will be admitted by audition CD/DVD. The format of the competition will include two preliminary rounds, a performance in a master class, and a final round. All twenty-four competitors will perform in both preliminary rounds and a master class.  Five competitors will be selected for the final round. All performances in every stage of the competition must be from memory.

Upon admission to the competition, detailed information regarding deadlines for submission of repertory and supporting materials will be provided to the competitors.

 

Repertoire Requirements

The complete repertory for the entire competition must include the following:

Solo Repertoire (60-70 minutes of music)

  1. A Bach Prelude and Fugue or two Scarlatti Sonatas.
  2. A complete sonata or set of variations written by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Clementi or Schubert.
  3. A complete work, movement of a work, or group of works written by Mendelssohn, Schumann, Chopin, Liszt, or Brahms.
  4. Two of the following options:
    a. A complete work, movement of a work, or group of works written by a French or Russian composer in the 19th, 20th, or 21st centuries.
    b. A complete work, movement of a work, or group of works written by a Spanish, Latin American, or North American composer in the 19th, 20th or 21st centuries.
    c. A work written by a composer in the 20th or 21st centuries, who is not represented by any of the national categories listed above.

The solo portion of the competition consists of three rounds:

  1. Preliminary Round I (25-30 minutes of solo repertoire)
  2. Preliminary Round II (25-30 minutes of solo repertoire)
  3. Master Class Round (one solo work less than 12 minutes in length)

The entire solo repertory (60-70 minutes) should be ordered and distributed through the three solo rounds at the discretion of each contestant.  All competitors accepted into the competition will perform in all three rounds of the solo portion of the competition.

 

Master Class Round:

All contestants must perform in the Master Class Round. Master classes will be taught by members of the piano faculty of the Eastman School of Music, or by members of the international jury. A special prize will be awarded for the best performance in a master class.  The required repertory for the Master Class Round is a solo work (or movement of a work) of the contestant’s choice, less than 12 minutes in length.

 

Finals:

Five finalists will be selected to perform a movement of a work for piano and orchestra in the final round with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra.
